Review by Jenn
A good study Bible can help enhance one's Christian walk, and I definitely feel as if this one does so. The translation is the New Living Translation, and I appreciate that it is a fairly easy read. The book is a hardcover and appears to be durable. When I have the Bible open, I don't feel like I'm "cracking the spine," as I have with some other Bibles. Additionally, the text is the perfect size for this "I'm almost in need of bifocals, but I'm holding off for a bit yet" gal: I can see it clearly. The words are dark on the page, which I like, and any charts, maps, tables, or graphs use neutral colors that don't obnoxiously compete with the Bible text.
This Bible contains many different features I look for in a study Bible. First of all, the introduction for each book is loaded with information. The introductions include author information, date, theme, key words (thematic), background, a summary of the content, personal application, an outline, and information on how the Holy Spirit is presented in each individual book. My favorite part of the introduction for each book, however, is the section entitled, "Christ Revealed." This section shows how Christ is presented in every single book of the Bible. I love this concept, as I feel like it helps readers see the continuity of this Great Book--it ties the story of our redemption together like a single thread running throughout the entire Bible. Secondly, the Bible notes explain various terms. Throughout this Bible, over 500 different terms are defined. These Word Wealth sections refer to Strong's Concordance and also give the English spelling of the original Greek or Hebrew word. Thirdly, I enjoy various thematic notes, which this Bible also has with its "Kingdom Dynamics" sections. These particular notes further explain a passage in terms of a particular theme. There are forty-one themes throughout the study Bible, and some of them are Growing in Knowing God, The Blood of the Covenant, Intercession, The Call to Unity, Traits of Spiritual Leadership, Lifestyle Stewardship, Prophetic Dreams and Visions in Scripture, and The Reconciling Ministry. The study notes do come from the perspective of believing that the gifts should be in full operation today. So, depending upon your thoughts in that area, you might not agree with all of the the study notes. However, I do like that in the notes different viewpoints are explained. For instance, in that sometimes controversial passage of Acts chapter 2, the author of the study notes clearly explains all the different interpretations of the work of the Holy Spirit in that chapter. I'm okay with that, and I appreciate that they do that in lieu of just stating one interpretation. Lastly, the book is chock full of cross references, charts, graphs, and wraps up each individual book through a section called "Truth in Action."
I am thrilled to be able to use this Bible to grow in my own walk with the Lord. I definitely recommend this wonderful study Bible.
