Reading Group Guide

  1. Brady has a difficult time handling the death of his wife. Only his love for his son Zach keeps him from allowing depression to swallow him completely. Have you suffered the loss of a loved one? How did you handle it? Where did you turn for help?
  2. Alicia believes that her job of capturing criminals is so important that she has no qualms about breaking protocol or bending laws to get it done. Do you think that it's sometimes acceptable for people to do wrong in order to bring about a greater good? When does "the end justify the means"? Is there a line that should never be crossed, regardless of the good that could occur by crossing it?
  3. Olaf believed that the murders he was ordered to commit were necessary to right a world gone wrong. How does he differ from a soldier at war?
  4. Luco Scaramuzzi is a con artist who came to believe his own hype. Have you ever deluded yourself into believing something untrue about yourself--whether it was that you were more skilled than you are or more charming or a better driver or anything else? Why did you do it? What are the dangers of deluding yourself?
  5. Despite his being treated poorly by Scaramuzzi, Pip spent years by his side. Have you ever seen people stay in relationships that were unhealthy for them? Why do you think they don't leave?
  6. Scaramuzzi responds swiftly and violently to Pip's betrayal. Have you ever been betrayed? How did you handle it? Can you think of better ways you could have responded? Do you still hold a grudge against the person who betrayed you?
  7. Niklas Hüber held a minority opinion about Scaramuzzi. Starting in chapter 18, he tries to turn Pip against Scaramuzzi. Have you ever been on the losing side of an important decision? How did you handle it?
  8. Father McAfee makes an appearance in chapter 37. He is a renowned expert on hellish near death experiences. Do you believe in near death experiences? What do you know about them? Do you believe that people have seen visions of hell during a near death experience?
  9. In chapter 76, Brady struggles with conflicting duties, which he believes are mutually exclusive: return to his son or try to rescue Alicia. In what ways have you struggled with conflicting priorities? How did you resolve these dilemmas?
  10. Do you believe that organizations like The Watchers, which is waiting to help Antichrist rise to power, exist in reality? What do you think they hope to gain from assisting him?
  11. What do you think is the theme or lesson of Comes a Horseman? How does this theme play itself out in each major character's life?
  12. Of the two FBI partners, Alicia tended to be the stronger one. Why do you think the author chose to put her in a position where she needed to be rescued? What part of Brady's and Alicia's characters were strengthened by the situation?
  13. Were you surprised by the revelation of Father Randall's identity? How were his two personas similar?
  14. The author attempted to tell what is essentially a plot-driven story through his characters, showing how they were affected by the actions of others. Do you think he succeeded? If you were Brady or Alicia, how would you have responded differently to being attacked?
  15. What are some of the issues that remain unresolved at the end of Comes a Horseman? What do you think will happen with each of these issues? In general, do you prefer novels that tie everything up at the end or ones that are vaguer about how some things end up?
  16. What scenes in the book gripped you the most? Why?
