Description

Stephen Friedman is making a good living in good times. He's just an ordinary guy. Or so he thinks.

But one day an extraordinary piece of information tells him differently. It's a clue from the grave of a Holocaust survivor. A clue that makes him heir to an incredible fortune . . . a clue that only he and one other man can possibly understand.

That man is Roth Braun, a serial killer who has been waiting for Stephen for thirty years. Roth was stopped once before. This time nothing will get in his way.

Known worldwide for page-turning, adrenaline-laced thrillers, Dekker raises the stakes in this story of passion, revenge, and an all-consuming obsession for the ultimate treasure.

Reading Guides

Reading Group Guide

  1. What does the word obsessed mean? Is there anything that you are obsessed with?

  2. In the beginning of the novel, Stephen feels it is much safer to bury his feelings about the past than to deal with them. How and why has he changed by the end of the novel?

  3. Ruth and Martha decide that their children will be named David and Esther. What is the significance of those names? What made them appealing to the mothers?

  4. Ruth's hope and passion exist in the midst of terrible horror. What gives her hope? Do you think she is right to hope or is she refusing to face reality?

  5. Gerik tells Stephen that "life is hardly worth living without an obsession." What do you think about this statement?

  6. This novel takes place during two time periods-one of them the Second World War. What else do you know about this time in history? What lessons do you think can be learned by looking back on these events?

  7. After three failed attempts to gain the contents of the safe, Stephen creates a lean-to in an abandoned building and refuses to go home. What could so captivate a man that he would give up not only his luxuries, but what many would consider to be basic necessities?

  8. Sweeney wants to know what Stephen will pay to get into the building-what the item inside is truly worth to him. Think about the thing that you value the most. What would you be willing to give for it?
  9.

  10. After Stephen discovers that Esther is alive, Chaim cautions him that "you can't lose sight of virtue or morality for the sake of passion." In your opinion, what is the practical application of that advice? Is it ever okay to bend or break the rules?
  11.

  12. Roth is as obsessed as Stephen is, but his obsession is focused on a completely different object. What are the differences in their obsessions? What were their motives? Discuss the ultimate results of each obsession.
  13.

  14. Do you consider unconditional obsession a positive or a negative quality? Can it ever be both?
  15.

  16. Do you think God is obsessed with anything? Do you think He wants us to be obsessed with Him?
  17.
