“The glory of God is man fully alive.”
- St Irenaeus

That’s exactly how you were wired to live. Yet sadness, depression, and feelings of apathy and helplessness often characterize your life. You survive but not thrive. This book is a treasure map that leads from monotony to adventure, from boring mediocrity to thrilling risk. Here are detailed directions to take hold of the power to live the kind of life you were created for and your soul longs for.

Fully Alive uncovers signs of life that lead to physical, mental, social, and spiritual empowerment in Christ.

• Discover the adventure hiding in the middle of the mundane.

• Exchange the pain of unmet expectations for the joy of living with expectancy.

• Get unstuck and take the first step that leads to a new body, mind, and spirit.

• Kick guilt to the curb and experience real freedom.

• Drive a stake into the heart of your everyday fears and dare to live again.

• Tap into a power that will protect you whether you’re crawling through the valley or standing on the mountaintop.

Henry David Thoreau is credited with saying, “Most men live lives of quiet desperation.” Not you! Not today! Not ever!

Fully Alive is the journey of Ken Davis to reach the fullness of living in in God. Ken Davis guides us to search for the stakes in our lives, and asks us to consider our emotional, physical, and spiritual capacities. With warm narrative Davis underlines moments of his life that change his perception of living. He then asks us how these lessons may apply to our lives, and how we might be able to reach fullness.

After reading the first paragraph I was drawn into Davis’s candid account of the loss of his niece, Davis then masterfully transitions this warm story to a lesson for his and our lives. Each time, Davis is able to capture my attention with narrative and then deliver a lesson fatal to my understanding of living fully alive.

However, I thought the line, “Lighten up and live,” might be misleading to the seriousness of living fully alive. Aside from that I fully enjoyed Fully Alive. (Posted on 12/10/12)

I wasn't sure what to expect when I offered to review this book. The reason I chose it is because my youngest daughter read Sheep Tales, also by Ken Davis, and loved it. A year later, she is still talking about that book.

When I read the description, I thought the book would be mostly about Davis' fitness journey. That is a huge part of the book, but there is so much more. Fully Alive is about being responsible for your physical health, your mental health, and your spiritual health. It's also about being in relationship with your family, your friends, and God. We can't go it alone. This book addresses that.

The first chapter reduced me to tears. After that, I could hardly put the book down. It was a three day read for me. Hey, I do have cooking, laundry, kids, a husband, and a blog to keep up! Otherwise, I would have cloistered myself in a room and read it straight through!

I highlighted so many passages, like this one:

"If you look carefully, you will find people all around you who show few signs of life. They haven't flatlined yet, but they stopped singing long ago."

How many people do you know that fit that description? Those are such powerful words! I'll bet you already have someone in mind who should read this book.

One of my favorite stories in the book is about where Davis is standing in one of those elevators where the doors in the front and the back open, and he doesn't realize the door behind him is open. Davis is a comedian at heart, and I laughed out loud at this one! However, there was a powerful point to the story. Here's one of the lines I highlighted:

"How often do we go through life beating on one familiar door screaming,
'Something is wrong! Let me through this door!' If we would just relax and turn around, there might be another door open for us."

I'm a volunteer coordinator at my church. One of the aspects of my "job" is to make sure people are plugged in where they belong, based on their gifts and passion. The chapter, "Finding Your Sweet Spot", really spoke to me:

"So how are you wired? If you don't know, how do you find out?
Take some time to think through your life. What makes you feel complete, satisfied,
and convinced that you're doing what God put you here to do? If you could invest your life in something and money was no object, what would you do?"

Those are life-changing words! The front cover of Fully Alive says "A Journey that Will Change Your Life." I believe this book can be the catalyst for change that so many need. Including me. I LOVE this book.

I hope you will pick it up, read it, and share it with those you love. That's my plan.
