Description

When the going gets tough, the tough hit the beach.

After years of being single, Lily's about to head down the aisle again. But just as she's about to take the plunge, she gets cold feet--ice cold.

To calm her pre-wedding jitters, Lily and her girlfriends take off on a getaway to Siesta Key, Florida. Harkening back to younger days, they stalk Donny Osmond, get tattoos (henna!), and turn the heads of local studs. But not far from any of their minds are the challenges of midlife: grown children coming home to roost, husbands in midlife crisis mode, and--could it be?--a first-time pregnancy at forty-five.

The "girls" all have their baggage in tow, but the salty air and laughing with friends is just what the doctor ordered--if they can weather the hot flashes until wedding bells ring!

Reading Guides

Reading Group Guide

  1. Maggie got through one life lesson and she immediately had to learn another one. Do you ever feel that way? What gets you through those lessons--besides chocolate?

  2. Lily experienced "cold feet" over getting married to Ron Albert. Did you ever have second thoughts about something you were planning? Do you feel you handled it the right way, or do you wish you had handled it differently? If so, how would you have handled it?

  3. Louise's husband was making positive changes, but it was happening so fast, Louise wasn't sure how to react. Do you react quickly to situations--strike out on impulse--or do you think your response through, weighing things carefully? Is there a right and wrong way to react?

  4. Jill had befriended someone at the gym and her friendship was misconstrued. Have you ever tried to reach out to someone and they, in turn, misinterpreted your actions? How did you handle it?

  5. Maggie, Lily, Louise, and Jill had each other to get through the difficult times. Sometimes God uses our friends to help us through the hard knocks in life. Do you have a community of friends or a best friend to lean on when life gets challenging?

  6. Maggie, Jill, and Louise encourage and support Lily by spending time and praying together. Do your friends know they can count on you when they are in need? What do you do to help them?

  7. When Gordon had his heart episode, Ron stays in town and helps Maggie by mowing her lawn and fixing her garbage disposal. Lily offered friendship, support, and prayers. Can you think of someone who needs a friend right now? What are some things you can do for them to let them know they are not alone?

  8. The Bible says Jesus is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Are you that kind of friend to anyone? If not, why not? Is it hard for you to make friends? Why? If you knew that your friendship could make all the difference in the life of someone else, what would you do?

  9. Sometimes the best way to make friends is to be a friend. Why not make one of your goals to reach out to someone each day through a phone call, a note, a visit, or an email? You don't have to do things in big chunks, sometimes a smile is enough. People are lonely, but it's hard to hear their cries through the noise of our busy world. There may be a neighbor or a friend a phone call away, waiting to hear from someone. Is that someone you?
