Description

If we pay attention to the alarms in our lives, they could save us.

Worry. Anger. Loneliness. Negative emotions are uncomfortable by design. Like any good fire alarm, they alert us to a greater danger. But they won’t help us if we try to cover them up, hide them behind excuses, or assume they will always plague us.

The only healthy way to manage negative emotions is to find their source and address the problem that set them off. As pastor Jeff Schreve says, “A specific and compelling message can be found in each of your negative, painful emotions. God Himself is trying to speak to you through those emotions—right now.”

So what is God saying? How can we understand our emotions—even change them? Schreve shows how the truth of the Bible can make sense of our confusion. The power of the Holy Spirit can lead us to freedom, and Jesus Christ can give us true peace in the midst of any crisis.

You don’t have to let your emotions run away with you, your family, or your future.

Runaway Emotions by Jeff Schreve August 18, 2013

Runaway Emotions by Jeff Schreve explains the negative emotions we have and gives insights as to why we have these emotions and what they mean from a spiritual perspective. Pastor Schreve likens these negative emotions to a smoke detector - a warning that one of our God-given desires is under attack. They are wake-up calls to help us to realize that something is not right, and to take steps to get things right from a spiritual perspective. In each chapter, Pastor Schreve explores a different negative emotion, explains what God-given desire is being attacked, and then gives practical actions that we can take to help get us back to where we should be spiritually. He explores such negative emotions as, depression, anger, guilt, and so on. He uses Scripture to help validate his arguments and to provide principles behind the actions that he recommends his readers to take to move past the negative emotions and make positive steps toward healing through Christ.

I fully expected to dislike this book when I got it. I expected it to be much like the other self-help books I’ve read where feelings are evaluated and then you’re told, “do this and everything will be all better.” But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really did like this book. Pastor Schreve doesn’t make this a “do this and you’ll feel better” book. He doesn’t say that we can get past all of these negative emotions on our own all the time. He even states that there may be times when medicine might need to be used to help with the emotions. To me, this was more of a “God-help” book, rather than a self-help book. I found the material engaging, the principles to be Biblically sound, and the practical actions to be helpful. I have even put into practice some of the advice that Pastor Schreve gave in this book, and have found it to be very helpful.

This book is more likely to be read by someone who is a Christian than someone who is not, but that is not to say that a non-Christian couldn’t get something from this book as well. I do recommend this book, and think it would be a good addition to anyone’s bookshelf. I anticipate that I will be going back to this book from time to time, to gain further insight and to put more of the author’s advice into practice. Overall, I give this book a huge thumb’s up.
