In the end we are all followers. August 15, 2012
In the end we are all followers. That is Len Sweet’s point in I Am a Follower: The Way, Truth, and Life of Following Jesus (Thomas Nelson, 2012).
As a minister who is frequently inundated with material on how to be a better church leader, Sweet’s book is a helpful rejoinder. Sweet is not claiming that there isn’t a need for leaders or leadership. Rather, it is that roles or functions that are undertaken when necessary should not be confused with our real identity as followers.
Disciples are first followers who follow the way, the truth, and the life of their Leader, Jesus Christ. Most of the book expands upon each of these and Sweet, who likes to play with words, labels them the Via, Verita, and Vita. Each section of the book is followed by “Interactives” which could be used for group study.
Overall, I appreciated Sweet’s emphasis on the importance of followership. Those who know me well would say that this is probably due to my personality type which has never scored high on various leadership diagnostic tools. But maybe those tools are not the right ones for measuring the life to which I’ve been called — following Jesus.
