  1. When Marsuvees Black arrives in Paradise, he tells them that he has come to bring "grace and hope to the lost town of Paradise." What does Black actually bring? Do the people see what he offers as grace and hope, or do they see it as something else?
  2. The thirty-seven students at the monastery have been sequestered there their whole lives, learning of virtue and love and all that threatened both. What, if anything, is missing from their learning since they do not experience the world as we know? What are the advantages of being locked away in a monastery? What are the disadvantages?
  3. How is the dungeon in the monastery like the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden?
  4. When the teachers discover that Billy has entered the tunnels, David refuses to stop him. Why do you think he makes that decision?
  5. As Johnny is discussing Black's actions at the church with his friends, one of them brings up the point that everyone in Germany liked Hitler at one time. What should we learn from that time in history? How can we discern if a leader is trying to benefit his people or destroy them?
  6. Johnny is not interested in Black's concoction as everyone else in the town is. What do you think makes him immune to Black's influence? Are there things that your friends are tempted by that simply don't interest you?
  7. David tells the other teachers that "What we're doing here requires a view of the dungeon. Do you understand? It's the only way to bring hope to that dungeon." How does this premise apply to our Christian walk? Do you think it's possible to take this view to an extreme that is unhealthy?

When Samuel first brings Johnny up to the canyon where the monastery is hidden, he tells him that to understand what is happening, Johnny has to "believe that God not only exists but that life is ultimately about an epic battle over the hearts of mankind. Good versus evil, not only as theological constructs or ideas, but as real forces at work wherever they are permitted to work." Do you believe that this is true? How do you think that life would be different if you and the people around you believed this enough to act on it?
  9. When Samuel tells the overseers that he is going to write himself into Paradise, he actually goes to Paradise himself. What do you think motivates him to do this? Was his decision a wise one?
  10. What similarities do you see between David allowing Samuel to go to Paradise and Abraham placing his son Isaac on the altar or God sending his son to this world?
  11. Samuel tells Steve that grace and hope are dead without love. Do you agree with that? Why is love so important?
  12. When Billy first goes to the forbidden levels, he is able to justify that his actions are not wrong. How do you think he feels by the end of the novel? Do you think he would have made different decisions if he had any idea what was going to happen? Was there anything that he gained?
