Description

Sometimes you have to go home to find out who you really are.

Charlie West went to bed one night an ordinary high-school student. He woke up a hunted man. Terrorists are trying to kill him. The police want to arrest him for the stabbing death of his best friend. He doesn’t know whose side he’s on or who he can trust. With his pursuers closing in on every side, Charlie makes his way back to his hometown to find some answers. There, holed up in an abandoned mansion, he’s joined by his friends in a desperate attempt to discover the truth about a murder he can't remember—and the love he can never forget.

Reading Group Guide

  1. Charlie is able to go back to his hometown in this novel. Can you relate to his longing to be home? If you’ve ever been away from home for an extended period of time, what was returning like? What is the one thing from home you would miss most if you were in Charlie’s place?
  2. One of the best things for Charlie about being home is seeing his friends and realizing that they still believe in him. Is there a time in your life when a friend or a group of friends stepped up and really supported you? How did that make you feel?
  3. Sensei Mike told Charlie that “There are some truths you can’t prove . . . There are some truths you can only live. Most of the really important truths—like the ones in the Declaration—you take them on faith at first. But then you live them, and that’s how you find out they’re really true” (pg. 56). What truths do you believe in that way?
  4. Charlie stays at the “Ghost Mansion” when he’s in Spring Hill. Is there a similar place in your hometown?
  5. The guys come up with a plan to try to get more information from Alex’s friends, but it doesn’t quite work out the way they hoped. Is there anything you would have done differently? If you had been in Josh’s shoes, could you have followed Charlie’s instructions to help you escape?
  6. Charlie experiences a lot of emotions—everything from seeing Beth again to having a gun pointed at his head. Which scene was your favorite? Did it involve him being back with his friends or running for his life?
  7. Charlie is desperately trying to figure out who the good guys really are—and if he’s one of them. At this point in the story, who do you think the good guys are? Who do you think will ultimately be Charlie’s strongest ally?
