Get this book! April 12, 2013
What an amazing journey this book has been able to take me on! I constantly struggle with guilt and how I make mistakes in my parenting. I mean, who doesn't want to be the perfect parent right? I read, and read, and READ every parenting book I can get my hands on, and before I know it I am more confused and more frustrated about what I am actually supposed to do, or NOT do. My children are miserable, my husband is miserable, I am beyond miserable and this downward spiral just keeps happening. Then I read The Passionate Mom- this is real folks. Real life. It's a gentle, forgiving and uplifting guide that will help you to be the very best parent you can be! Simply put, raw emotion and real-life expierence from the author reminds us that we are not alone in this parenting journey and that we all have struggles. Although I am not a religious person, Susan has taken simple religious teachings to give us a easy reminder of how to get back to the simple basics. She talks mostly about being passionate but there is such a much bigger lesson to be learned here. Each chapter made me want to go back and read it again, just in case I missed something. It's that good, get this book. You won't be disappointed!

Wow. The Passionate Mom is truly a life changing book. I have been recommending it to other moms since the moment I started reading. And its lessons can be applied to much more than just parenting! The 10 P’s are great lessons that can be applied to anything you are passionate about. The mortar lists at the end of each chapter are great character building traits that I pray I can build within myself and my sons. This is a must read for any Mom and will be my go to baby shower gift! Love it!

A must read for moms! April 11, 2013
The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill is a book written for moms who are passionate to parent their children in purposeful ways. Susan's practical and biblical building blocks come from the book of Nehemiah in the Bible. There are ten ways a mother needs to cultivate as parent well: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem solving and perseverance. Each chapter outlines solid principles with Susan's real life examples, confessions and powerful encouragement to inspire moms to dare to be the parent that God has desired for them.
I thought I was a passionate mom, but after reading this book I feel like I've been given the tools to really be the passionate mom I want to be. I was very intrigued with Susan's connection of how to be a mom with the story of Nehemiah. She strategically wrote step by step exactly how to embrace the high calling of a mom and rely totally on God for all that is needed. She identified so many areas that I need to work on and also addressed areas I hadn't even thought of yet like dating, computers, cell phones and social media (my kids are still very young). I was very impressed, encouraged and inspired to pursue being a passionate mom. This book is a definite must have for moms who need biblical, practical and honest truth to pursue God's desire for motherhood in their lives.

I am a mother to three wonderful children (ages 4, 8 and 18) and also work full-time outside of the home. I know time is precious and I have to say this is one of those books you will want to pick up each time you have that extra time. This book has been such an eye-opener for me in so many ways!!! The Passionate Mom will be changing lives...April 16 can't come soon enough. Feeling very blessed to be a part of this!

an encouraging plan for the toughest job in the world April 10, 2013
Let’s face it being a mother is the best job in the world, but it can also be an isolating and very hard job as well. This book gives many real world examples that make you realize that as a mother you are not alone! When you have a newborn, there is a plan for everything, a plan for sleeping, a plan for eating, etc. As your child grows, things change and a different kind of plan is needed, but what kind of plan and where do you find this plan? The Passionate Mom gives you a plan and gives you encouragement!! In this book, a step by step plan is outlined based on the book of Nehemiah. It is a very helpful and easy read. I highly recommend this book to any Mom!

Wonderful book for all moms April 9, 2013
The Passionate Mom is a book all moms should read. It provides a clear, organized plan for any mom who cares and loves their kids as much as God Himself cares and loves us. The reader is taken through the book of Nehemiah from the Old Testament of the Bible. Due to a variety of circumstances, Nehemiah took charge of rebuilding the wall surrounding the city of Jerusalem. Using the rebuilding of the wall as a guide, Susan describes how to build a wall around your family for both protection and provision. Each chapter of the book describes a brick that should be part of every passionate mom's wall and the various traits needed that act as the mortar to keep the wall from crumbling. The 10 bricks needed are: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem solving and perseverance. Interspersed between the brick chapters are an interlude on building your wall and one on opening gates in your wall, since as your kids grow, they will need to leave and begin to make their own choices and decisions.
I loved reading this book. The image of building a wall for my family was very easy to picture and allowed me to keep that image in mind as I read. Susan used plenty of examples to describe the different bricks from Nehemiah's live, as well as her own life. By asking questions and having spots where thinking of my own answers was necessary, I was able to think about how to put the bricks of my wall into place. I look forward to placing the bricks into mortar around my family and doing the best I can, to be the best mom I can be.
I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own.

The Passionate Mom is a Positive Read April 9, 2013
The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill is a positive book that focuses on the influence of mothers. I wanted to see if this book was any different than all my other "Mom" instruction books, and I found it really was refreshing! The theme is practical with the "bricks" we need for building being qualities we must work on in ourselves. The author is just so REAL in this book about her imperfections as a mom, so when she is handing you these "bricks", you do not feel judged or discouraged. After reading it, you feel positive about being a mom, and you feel like you have some new tools to handle the variety of situations that arise for a mom. I came away being spiritually encouraged and would recommend this book to moms of all ages and even "expecting" moms as a definite must read!

The Yellow Brick Road of Parenting Books! Just follow it! April 9, 2013
Where do I start praising this book? If you are like me, many times you have read parenting books and they tell you all kinds of great facts about how kids think and what they need to thrive in this crazy world; but then they don't explain the hows! Like how do I get them to the finish line of salvation and what do I do when they run off the path?!? Or what happens when I fall off the cool collected mommy wagon myself?!? Those vague type of parenting books remind me of a great review of a restaurant on Google without directions, hours of operation or even an address! This book is NOT one of those books! The Passionate Mom lays down a clear path and outlines the 10 Ps it takes to be a passionate mom! From the first page until the back cover, there is nonstop encouragement and knowledge waiting to be soaked in!
One of my favorite aspects of The Passionate Mom is that Susan Merrill intertwines honest (and humorous) vignettes with frank calls to action! There were many times I wanted to go wake my kids up so I could tell them "Mommy is sorry! I am going to... for now on!" I was so energized and encouraged by her guided tour through Nehemiah!
Even better this book is SUCH AN EASY READ! Many times the only opportunity I get to read is before bed. At that point I can't handle elaborate text and The Passionate Mom was a perfect bedtime read! I couldn't put it down and often ended with tears in my eyes and prayer in my heart! I promise this book WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!
Open your heart to what God would have you hear and then open the book to start the first day of the rest of your NEW AND IMPROVED mommy journey! After you have read this book head over to www.IMOM.com for some great FREE resources to help you on your way to becoming a Passionate Mom!

The Passionate Mom is for all parents! April 9, 2013
The Passionate Mom uses the story of Nehemiah, from the Bible, to illustrate just what a "passionate" mom should bring to her work of raising children. Written from a Christian-perspective, but well-worth the time of any parent from any religious background (or no religious background at all), Merrill creates a strong analogy between Nehemiah and his story and a parent and his/her story. (While the book talks to mothers specifically, I think fathers can take away a lot from the book, too.) Interestingly, Nehemiah never had children, but was tasked with creating a wall to safeguard God's temple in a city which had been destroyed. According to Merrill, a mother, likewise, creates a wall of protection for her children. She does so using 10 bricks, all beginning with the letter "P," and thus, easily remembered --- in other words, a Nehemiah mother uses: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem-solving, and perserverance to protect her child(ren). Different pieces of mortar make-up each building block of the wall, and include such things as alertness, availability, attentiveness, self-control, selflessness, love, initiative, tolerance, discipline, integrity, boldness, trustworthiness, determination, wisdom, discernment, persuasiveness, faith, courage, generosity, and determination. The passionate mother will have all of these qualities.
However, even the author recognizes that not all mothers demonstrate these skills at all times, and she includes "confessions" throughout the book on ways that she, too, falls short of precisely what she is advocating, making her seem more human and connected to the result of us.
Merrill also does a tremendous job of explaining the mother's task of opening and closing gates to the wall at different times --- these gates are the ways in which our children interact with the world around them, mostly via technology, but the author gives examples of events ranging from dating to going to college. A mother has to be careful to open each gate and close each gate, as necessary, in order to protect her child.
Merrill is an experienced mother, and her experience shows when she uses examples from her own life to demonstrate key concepts. The book flows nicely, and will be good to have on hand to read again and again as my child gets older, and I consider opening gates in the wall.
If you take nothing else from this review, please understand that while told in the form of an analogy, this is a parenting book for everyone who wants to be the best parent he/she is capable of being. The traits of The Passionate Mom are traits that any mom (or dad) should aspire to, regardless of religious/non-religious affiliation. Above all, The Passionate Mom, of whom Merrill writes, is a good person, possessing a strong character and high moral values. I know I would be happy if I raised my son to possess similar traits and characteristics.

For Real Life Moms April 9, 2013
Are you a parent? Are you expecting? Read this book. Then next year, read it again. This book echoes my hope for my children & reassures me that I’m not alone. We are constantly questionning ourselves as moms whether it be our style of raising a child, discipline techniques, or our relationship with each child. This book does an amazing job of touching on so many aspects of parenting and then giving real life examples. You will find yourself shaking your head yes or saying “exactly” chapter after chapter.
The author has 5 children of her own, drawing the reader in providing first hand accounts of her experiences. You’ll learn about building your own “wall” for your children. The first brick described is perhaps the most important and a true testament to Susan’s abilities as a mom. Brick #1 is Perception, “A passionate mom must perceive what is happening in her child’s world”. As you read thru the remaining 7 “bricks” you will be captivated with how you relate to each. Regardless of the age of your child or children, you will be able to relate to the content in this book. I will be purchasing this book for my closest girlfriends and I’m hopeful they will pass the book on to other great moms.

Another great tool for my Mom Toolbox April 8, 2013
As any parent, I question my parenting. "Am I doing the right thing?" "How do I know what the right thing is?" "What do I do next?" I find it particularly difficult as a single mother, because there are times when I have no one to bounce ideas and problems off of. The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today's World lays down steps on how to parent based off one of the books of the bible, Nehemiah. This book helped me in several ways: It helped me to see that I need to involve God more in my parenting. It encouraged me to delve into my bible more and learn about a book of the bible that I had never given much time or thought to. And it led me me grow more confident in my parenting plan. This is a great new tool for my Mom Toolbox!

Insightful, Encouraging and Honest; The Passionate Mom Has it all!
I have tried reading many parenting books (mother of 2 tweens!) and none of them captured my attention and "talked" to my heart like "The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today's World". It is refreshing to have an honest, Christian based parenting book in my resources! Susan Merrill helps you look inside yourself with "The Passionate Mom". Susan lets you know you are not alone in your mistakes as a mother (and we all make them :) and she gives her real "confessions" that you can relate to. Her writing style is very easy to follow and she also incorporates humor into her book - and we all could use a little of that with the challenges of parenting! Susan teaches us to strengthen our parenting walls using the 10 P's (Perception, Ponder, Passion, Prayer, Patience, Preparation, Purpose, Planning, Problem Solving and Perseverance). Free printables are available at susanme.com, which are a great resource; 10 ways to Pray for Your Child, 10 Ways to Pray for Your Teen, a 30-Day Passionate Mom Challenge and a great bookmark reminding us of the 10 P's!
I highly recommend this book to mothers of any age and every situation! I know it has helped me and it can help you to!

Interesting, Encouraging AND Helpful! April 7, 2013
I have a stack of "helpful" books that I want to read, someday. This book falls into the "helpful" category. However, I am glad I picked it to read TODAY! Moms, be encouraged! Susan Merrill offers hope, support, and practical, realistic advice for parents AND fills this book with enough interesting personal stories to keep you reading. Susan has the experience of a veteran mom and the heart and humor to share it. I love getting the iMOM "Espresso Minute" emails and through these I was introduced to Susan. When I heard that she wrote a whole book, I knew it was a must-read. Pick up this book and don't put it down until you finish it! Moms, take heart! It can be done!

Inspiring, practical, parenting plan April 6, 2013
So much practical, yet incredibly insightful information, packed into this book. I love the way the author shares her own parenting stories and even her "confessions." She's transparent about parenting her five children (two adopted at an older age) who have a range of temperaments. She does not pretend to be the perfect mom - but she provides all of us moms with a vision for parenting our children. She believes that a passionate mom can parent well AND with confidence; and her book provides a plan.
"A passionate mom has a plan for parenting her children from birth to adulthood." Although that may sound daunting, Merrill's approach is not. As I stated earlier, the book is insightful and inspiring, yet practical.
Her use of Nehemiah as a guide for parenting is nothing short of inspired.I would highly recommend this book for moms with children of any age.

Invaluable "Easy" Read April 6, 2013
Here's the down and dirty of being a mom - at least of a busy preschooler, like I am: When you have time to read a self-challenging book you want "Just the facts, Jack!" Susan Merrill delivers her message in just this way! With just the right number of personal stories and professional quotes, Merrill give us practical ways to use the lessons taught through the story of Nehemiah in our everyday life. In a way that is easy to read during our everyday life! Don't get me wrong, this is not a watered down instruction manual for Moms! This is a call to all mothers that WE are the ones that our children need to guide them into adulthood. It is our duty to be vigilant and equip them to be the best people that they can be! The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today's World is laid out into 10 "P's", the steps we need to go through over and and over again while parenting our children. This writing style makes it easy to read and follow even with many interruptions! In closing, I HIGHLY recommend this book to mothers of ANY age! It's never to late to give your children the advantages of active parenting!

Like Getting Advice from a Best Friend! April 5, 2013
As a mom of two active boys, each day seems to bring new twists and turns, new challenges, and new joys leaving me to wonder each night... am I doing this right? Am I doing enough? Am I giving my kids what they need to be happy, healthy, successful adults someday? There are a million articles, books, and websites but like Goldilocks it often seems hard to find one that is "just right"... some seem too stuffy... some not academic enough... but Susan Merrill's book The Passionate Mom seemed to fit "just right!" Reading Susan's book felt like talking to a trusted friend! Her book provides honest and heartfelt insight and stories that are easy to identify with as a parent combined with a solid plan for tackling parenting issues in today's world by following the 10 P's of passionate parenting. The Passionate Mom is a refreshing approach to the typical parenting book and a great read for parents with children of all ages!

"Teach a (wo)man to fish..." April 4, 2013
As kids, we've all played that game where someone tells us not to think of a word and then we can't get the Word out of our mind, which is the whole point of the game. I finished reading TPM and, in relation to the unending supply of "How To" parenting books of this age, I'd give TPM three stars. There were so many dark corners of parenting that this book never went to. How "dare" it be titled "Dare to Parent in Today's World"?! I was "pondering" exactly thas, before realizing I had been instructed by the author to "ponder" on purpose..
The love of a good treasure hunt, which I acquired in the process of raising three boys, sprang into action and I "pondered" also reading the book of Nehemiah. I must confess that I didn't even know where Nehemiah was in the Bible, and if it were very long I might still have turned back. Once there, I read it. I was surprised to discover just how relevant so many of the messages were to things going on today in my own family (and I would suspect every family). However, families are like snowflakes; no two are alike. So, Merrill could have continued to write volumes about the book of Nehemiah and not spoken to my heart in the same way reading those few pages for myself did.
In TPM I discovered many things, including a new key to life. I may hear a message, I may repeat a message, but the real blessing comes from doing! "Pondering" both TPM and the book of Nehemiah held a multitude of revelations. I learned that Nehemiah was a man of prayer and his favorite prayer was "remember me, Lord!". It wasn't because he was afraid God would forget. Every time we ask God to remember us, we are doing something even more important- we are remembering Him! Our lives will change as we learn to remember Him through each day and in every circumstance we face (Hope For Today Today Bible NLT).
In the end, the three real Stars in the Ultimate review make up the Trinity. I suspect Merrill won't mind at all if, in the words of Toby Mac, He were to "Steal My Show...take it away...watch Him go!"...

Parent with a Plan and Purpose! Great book!!! April 4, 2013
"Every mom needs a plan, a long-term I've only-got-eighteen-years-with-this-child plan," from The Passionate MOM by Susan Merril.
For the life of me & my children, I don't remember getting home from the hospital with my copy of the plan. Just like I don't remember much of anything after the birth of my first born. Fast forward seven years and my baby is living a life full of activity, school, softball, dance, church, AWANA. I don't remember every step of the journey but, I know I did not get my "plan" book.
Thanks to Susan's book The Passionate Mom I now have a plan and a new way to gauge if it is working for my kids. Through her 10 chapter book she takes you step by step through cultivating the 10 P's and how they fit together to accomplish your goal of being the best mom you can be.
Susan Merril is the founder of iMOM.com and one super star mom that leaves me feeling like I am an All-Star Mom! Thanks to her new book, "The Passionate MOM," I am finally seeing what my role is in guiding my child to a favored life among men and God. There should be an end goal. Taken from the Passionate Mom, "It takes great courage to face the unknown, and there are many unknowns in parenting." Susan is full of wise parenting advice and her brand new book will be a must read for all moms.
The Passionate MOM addresses many questions all of us moms have: What do I want for my child? What is my goal? How do I parent in today's world? How can I give my child a secure future?...etc. These huge questions have hit me like a bomb when I read this book. Yes, sure, I have goals but, typically they fall into the category of getting through the next hour, activity or through this night until my kids fall asleep. I want them to go to school make friends, make the team, and get into the right college but, I never knew I could have a real purposeful plan for my girls.

It's about time! April 4, 2013
Finally a book for Mothers that is truly encouraging and makes me feel I can be a better mom! The Passionate Mom is written by Susan Merrill who is not only the program director for iMom.com but also is Mother to 5 children birthed and blessed to her and husband Mark. The Passionate Mom is a book that once you start reading it; it will be hard to put down. I had my doubts at first, as a mom of 3 I’ve been searching for that parent book to help me feel normal, to also encourage me that it does get better and that I can do this mommy thing the right way the. THIS IS THE BOOK that I have been waiting for.
Based off of Nehemiah, a book in the Bible, Susan Merrill has made what I thought to be a boring book in the Bible to be the most amazing book. Even if you are not a Christian “The Passionate Mom” still has great mothering skills to apply. There are a lot of steps and points in her book, but all are very relatable and doable.
Any mother who strives for the best for her children really needs to get a copy of this book. I am normally not a kindle type reader, but having a copy on my kindle makes it easier for me throughout my day to re-read it and refresh myself with the encouraging words from this book. Quotes like “Patience is a like my keys often lost and found in the strangest places” and then there is “Everyone has time, and so do you. You are just not making this a priority for your time”, and lastly “passion never fails when it is fueled by love”. The Passionate Mom is truly a book that is all about LOVE!

Ridiculously Amazing! April 4, 2013
Susan Merrill did an excellent job writing a book relevant to parenting today. She validated many of my maternal feelings and intuitions. I love how she not only validates motherhood today, but she also relates it back to biblical principles. This book will help reveal areas of weakness and give practical advice on being a better mother. It’s easy to get into a routine of habit and miss opportunities with our children simply because we are too busy to notice. As Susan says, you must have a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). Susan’s words will inspire you to see past your present struggles in a positive mother and your children will thank you for perfecting her 10 P’s! Love, Love, Love this book and author!!!

It takes PASSION April 3, 2013
I have passion but didn't know what to do with it. Honestly, I didn't know I was supposed to do anything with it in so far as "using" it to mother my children. After reading this book, however, I realized that I did have passion and better still, passion to be the mom God created me to be.
Susan Merrill, using the book of Nehemiah from the Bible as her guide, has written a transparent, relatable book for all Mom's in all stages of motherhood.
I have 3 young children under 5 and could so very well relate to her stories and her advice.
It all begins with Passion. Something that all mom's have, something God gave us, but we all may not realize. PASSION! Passion to be a perceptive, pondering, prayerful, patient, prepared, purposeful, planned, problem solving mother with perserverance.
If you love your children and I know you do, if you want to improve your mothering, this is the book you must put on your must read list!

Invest a small amount of time & money... Reap countless rewards! April 3, 2013
Logistically, this book is a quick, easy read and a very small financial investment.
Emotionally, readers are gifted with a wealth of encouragement for becoming the best parent God created you to be, and your children will reap benefits that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Merrill's writing style make it feel as if you're sitting down with a girlfriend to chat over coffee - complete with her own personal mommy confessions. Everyone has a unique list of parenting strengths and weaknesses. But through Nehemiah's example, you'll learn how to bolster your strengths and strengthen the areas where you fall short... and you'll discover that you can personalize your parenting approach for each individual child in order to meet them where they are.
This is not a concrete list of do's and don'ts. It's a soft place to land... a place to be uplifted... a place you'll revisit over and over when you need a reminder (so get your highlighter ready!). This would be a great book for your book club or Bible study group to discuss, and would make an invaluable gift for moms (or dads!) at any stage of parenthood.

A great book for all kinds of moms April 3, 2013
I really, really enjoyed this book. It talks about how to be a good mom using ten points that are taken from the biblical store of Nehemiah. I'm not exactly Christian, but I still found that this book really spoke to me. The framework might be a biblical story, but the advice is firmly based in the real world. The ten points (Perception, Pondering, Passion, Prayer, Patience, Preparation, Purpose, Planning, Problem Solving, and Perseverance) speak to any mom, regardless of her religious beliefs (or lack there of, really). The advice, generally speaking, is about paying attention to your child, taking time to really hear them, to mentor them and guide them through life.
Susan Merrill's writing style is very easy to read. She is clear and concise, and very likeable. I also appreciate the fact that she doesn't try to present herself as a perfect mom. She admits her mistakes and presents them to her readers so we can learn from them.

Best Parent's Manual Yet April 3, 2013
While this book is not a parent's owner manual for their child, if you desire to be the best mom God created you to be this book should top your must read list on the topic of parenting wisdom. Very down to earth, I can definitely relate to most of the book. And by the way, she does not leave you thinking "she's got it all down perfect". Frequently throughout the book she gives you little confessions so you know you're not alone. An extremely insightful book using God's one and only Nehemiah as her vantage point. You won't be sorry or feel like you've wasted time.

I started reading through the bible this year and couldn't figure out what God wanted me to learn in the book of Nehemiah and then I start reading this book and Susan uses Nehemiah to teach about parenting! And what a perfect biblical example of caring and nurturing. Excellent book!! Buy one for yourself and a friend! Start a study and learn together!

Excellent book for moms April 1, 2013
The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill is one of the best books on being a mother I have ever read (and I have read a bunch). I wish I had been able to read this much earlier in my journey as a mom. Susan is not an author you feel is preaching to you, but rather she is a fellow mom sharing her struggles, successes and encouraging you at the same time. I love how she has used the book of Nehemiah as points for mothering. Good moms are good leaders, just like Nehemiah, and this book does a wonderful job showing these points.
This is a book I will have highlighted and reread many times. I would highly recommend it to any mom! It would be a perfect gift for new mothers or ones who need a fresh perspective on their calling as a mother. None of us do it perfectly, but I have felt so much more inspired and excited after reading The Passionate Mom. I am so thankful for women like Susan who share their wisdom and experience with the rest of us!

Parent on Purpose! April 1, 2013
Through the story of Nehemiah, Susan Merrill takes moms on the journey of motherhood. The Passionate Mom does not tell you what you are doing wrong as a parent, but encourages you on the things that you can do well for your children. Through the “Ten P’s” (perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem solving, and perseverance), Merrill enables you to take action in your own homes to become the mother you have always dreamed of being!

Motherhood is full of uncertainty. What do my children really need? Why are they doing that? Is this normal? What can I do to help them? How can I know for certain that I am doing this right?
logistics are easy. Anybody can do laundry and carpool. But what makes a mother
the best mom she can be?
better scheduling. Or more activities. Or less.
It is passion—the passion to teach, protect, study, and prepare her children for the future.
Great, but how?
Susan Merrill, the mother of five incredibly different children, has asked that question countless times. And she has read countless answers specific to a certain child’s temperament, age, or situation. But nothing she read offered an overall approach to parenting that would enable her to say with confidence, “I am doing this right.” She never guessed she would find a foundational plan—a reliable, universal parenting approach in the Old Testament book of Nehemiah. In The Passionate Mom, Susan takes you on a journey through Nehemiah and into the heart of parenting. Her stories and confessions in every chapter reveal what she has learned: no mom can control her child’s future, but every mom can parent well. There is a plan—a roadmap for how a passionate mom can parent almost any child, confidently.
