“Our Father, who art in heaven….”
The opening words of the Lord’s Prayer have become so familiar that we often speak them without a thought, sometimes without any awareness that we are speaking at all. But to the disciples who first heard these words from Jesus, the prayer was a thunderbolt, a radical new way to pray that changed them and the course of history.
Far from a safe series of comforting words, the Lord’s Prayer makes extraordinary claims, topples every earthly power, and announces God’s reign over all things in heaven and on earth. In this groundbreaking new book, R. Albert Mohler Jr. recaptures the urgency and transformational nature of the prayer, revealing once again its remarkable, world-upending power. Step by step, phrase by phrase, The Prayer that Turns the World Upside Down explains what these words mean and how we are to pray them.
The Lord’s Prayer is the most powerful prayer in the Bible, taught by Jesus to those closest to him. We desperately need to relearn its power and practice. The Prayer that Turns the World Upside Down shows us how.

I caught wind of this book being published a couple months before it was made available and was excited to read it, to say the least, so when I saw that Thomas Nelson was the publisher I was eager to request a review copy. Dr. Mohler is the president of the seminary where I am currently a student and is, without question, one of the leading minds within evangelicalism. When he speaks people listen, and for good reason. Likewise, when a book boasts his name on the front cover, you better believe that it will find its way onto many people's bookshelf -- we're all the wiser and more well-equipped for it.
The Prayer that Turns the World Upside Down: The Lord's Prayer as a Manifesto for Revolution is an important book, to completely understate the case. Growing up, I'm sure my experience is all too similar to many others, the Lord's Prayer was a prayer that was thoughtlessly recited prior to major events: for me, prior to high school sporting events, like basketball and football games at a moment immediately preceding our quick transition into a "We ready" chant. I got really good at remembering this prayer but was entirely ignorant as to what I was actually reciting. Dr. Mohler addresses this ignorance head-on by walking expositionally through Jesus's recitation of this prayer and all of its paradigm-shattering implications. Drenched in the gospel, drenched in encouragement, drenched in pastoral warnings, though this book is a quick read, it would behoove the reader to proceed slowly and thoughtfully through these pages. As Dr. Mohler unveils, the Lord's prayer is not for "sissies." It confronts us with God's glory and our relative smallness, with God's self-sufficiency and our dependence, and furthermore with our great need for him in matters of sustenance, forgiveness, and deliverance. This is an unabashedly Godward book which teaches us about an unabashedly Godward prayer. In our current cultural climate, this book ought to be required reading for all Christians.
The Prayer that Turns the World Upside Down is a book that can be read in an afternoon. The teaching is clear and weighty and compels the reader to think deeply about what's being said and to rethink much of his/her potential waywardness as it relates the posture by which they approach the Lord in prayer. It's a timely corrective, a "manifesto" leading the reader toward a more Godward prayer life. Read it, and then read it again. (Posted on 3/11/2018)
